  • B6 - Biofuels
    • Biogas can be used in the following ways:
      • 1. Burned to power turbines and generate electricity.
      • 2. Burned to heat water and produce steam for the central heating system.
      • 3. Used as a fuel by cars and buses.
      • Large scale biogas production uses "Sludgewaste"
        • Waste from sewage works or sugar factories
        • Uses a continuous flow method
      • Biogas is made from 70% methane and 30% carbon dioxide
        • Contains trace of hydrogen, nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide
        • 50% off methane safe to burn, 10% can be explosive
        • Methane is sometimes released from landfill sites
          • 50% off methane safe to burn, 10% can be explosive
          • This make a landfill site unsuitable for many years so a new one must be established

            • Biogas is better for the environment than fossil fuels
              • Easy to produce and won't run out
              • Its gets rid of raw sewage as it can be used as an ingrediant

          • Biogas Digesters are made from plant waste and animal poo
            • They need to be kept at a contant temperature
              • Usually 30-40 degrees celcious as it is optimum for the bacteria's respiration
