    • Non Insane Automatism
      • Arises from external cause BRATTY
      • Total loss of control
      • Complete acquittal
      • Caused by spasm, reflex action or convulsion
      • Temporary impairment resulting from external factor
      • Failing to eat as diabetic = external cause QUICK
    • Insanity / Automatism
      • Lead to complete acquittal
      • Must prove were exercising no control over bodily movements whatsoever
      • Up to courts how unconscious defendant must be PERKINS
      • Obiter said "being attacked by bees would  cause defendant to lose self control" HILL v BAXTER
      • Sneezing = state of automatism WHOOLLEY
      • Self induced automatism not accepted BAILEY
      • If defendant did not know actions would lead to self induced state, can use defence HARDIE
      • Epilepsy = internal cause, can use defence SULLIVAN
      • Failing to take insulin = internal cause HENNESSY
      • Sleepwalking = internal cause BURGESS
      • Defect of reason CLARKE
      • Caused by disease of the mind SULLIVAN
      • Meaning defendant did not know nature of their act BURGESS, or that it was legally wrong WINDLE
    • External cause = Non insane automatism
    • Internal cause = Insanity / Automatism
