    • WEINERS MODEL OF ATTRIBUTION (1979)
      • ABILITY: internal/stable
        • Internal because your ability depends upon you. Stable because your ability is unchangeable
      • TASK DIFFICULTY: external/stable
        • External because it depends on the external environment e.g. level of opposition. Stable because you cant change the difficulty.
      • EFFORT: internal/unstable
        • Internal because you decide how much effort you put in. Unstable because your effort levels can change.
      • LUCK: external/unstable
        • External because luck may be controlled by the environment. Unstable because luck can always change.
    • Weiner's model is not sport specific, which causes problems when trying to apply it to sports situations. E.g. task difficulty changes frequently in sport, especially in team games as the opposition changes.
      • This model can be applied to  sport in a general sense and can be used to promote reasons for sports outcomes that can be motivating rather than demotiviating.
        • If reasons for winning are stable, the individual is motivated to achieve again. If failure is attributed to an unstable factor the individual is more likely to try again because there is a good chance the outcome will change.
    • Sports performers who lose tend to attribute their failure to external causes, whilst those who succeed usually attribute their success to internal causes. This is known as the self-serving bias.
      • SELF-SERVING BIAS: a persons tendency to attribute their failure to external reasons, e.g. 'I lost the badminton match because the floor was too slippy' - an excuse to explain their poor performance.
    • Weiner's added a third dimension to his attribution model - the dimension of controllability.
      • CONTROLLABILITY: whether attributions are under the control of the performer or under control of others, or whether they are uncontrollable (e.g. nothing can be done by anyone (luck/weather))
        • This dimension takes into consideration where a cause for sports outcome is controllable or uncontrollable
      • ATTRIBUTED CAUSES ACCORDING TO INTERNAL, EXTERNAL, STABILITY AND CONTROLLABILITY CONTINUUMS:
        • ABILITY: internal/stable/uncontrollable
        • EFFORT: internal/unstable/controllable
        • DIFFICULTY: external/stable/uncontrollable
        • LUCK: external/unstable/uncontrollable
      • Coaches and teachers tend to praise effort and controllable success, and punish or criticise lack of effort and controllable failures.
        • Concentrating on uncontrollable external and stable factors is not much use if you want to turn failure into success.
