- Case studies
- Schaffers and Emerson
- They suggested that attachment happens in stages.
- Stage 1: Asocial stage (first few weeks) The baby recognises and forms bonds with c/g. Similar behaviour between objects and humans but adult faces calm them.
- Stage 2: Indiscriminate attachment (2-7 months) More observable social behaviour but preferences to humans rather than objects. Accepts cuddles and comfort- no separation anxiety so they have indiscriminate behaviour.
- Stage 3: Specific attachment 97 months) Displaying anxiety - separation anxiety. A specific attachment is formed with and adult who responds to babies actions the most (not who's always with them)
- Stage 4: Multiple attachments (1Year) They extend their attachments with other adults they see often. These are called secondary attachments. Babies start to form secondary attachments within 1 month of specific attachments.
- They suggested that attachment happens in stages.
