  • Atoms, ions and compunds
    • General knowledge
      • Neutron mass: 1/1836
      • Properties of isotopes: similar chemical properies as these are determined by the relation shipbetween electrons and the nuclei and not neutrons. Isotopes have the same number of electrons
      • Moles: amount of substance that has the same number of particles as there are particles in 12g of carbon-12
      • Binary compound: a compound composed of two elements
      • Diatomic molecules: elements which exist naturally as a combination of two atoms
    • Ionic charges
      • Nitrate NO3: -1
      • Phophorus P: -3
      • Silver Ag: +1
      • Zinc Zn: +2
    • Relative mass
      • Mass defect: the difference between the mass of an atom and the sum of the masses of it protons, neutrons and electrons
      • 1u: Standard mass for atomic mass of 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
      • Relative atomic mass: the weighted mean mass of an atom comapred to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
      • Mass spectrometer: finds the percentage abundance of isotopes in the sample of an element
      • Mass spectrometer steps: Sample placed: vaporization, ionization, acceleration, defelction, detection, and a greater abundance larger signal
      • mass to charge ratio (m/z): relative mass of an ion
