  • conformity- Asch:
    • procedure
      • recruited 123 male american undergraduate students- took part in 18 trials
      • tested with 6-8 confederates- 12 critical trials where confederates gave wrong answers
      • pps shown 2 white cards- 1 standard line, 3 comparison lines- one line same as standard- pps had to identify which matched the standard
    • findings:
      • 25% didn't conform
      • 75% conformed at least once
      • wrong answer was given 36.8% of the time
      • Asch effect- the extent to which pps conform even when situation is unambiguos
      • pps said they conformed to avoid social rejection
    • variations
      • group size- the number of confederates was changed- wanted to see if group size was more important then agreement of group
        • 2 confederates- conformity was 13.6% with 3- 31.8%- adding more made little difference
        • 3 was sufficient, high majority not needed
      • unanimity- a dissenting confederate was introduced- test if the presence of a non conformant made a difference
        • level of conformity decreased- made pps more independent-even if dissenter was giving right or wrong answer- 25% wrong answers
        • suggests to some extent influence of the majority depends on the group being unanimous
      • task difficulty
        • line lengths were made more similar- harder to distinguish-more ambiguous
          • conformity increased- ISI plays a greater role- more likely to look for guidance
