- Asch's research
- Procedure
- Participant asked which of 3 lines matched the standard.
- 123 white American males. Each naive with 6-8 confederates.
- 18 trials, confederates gave wrong answer for 12 trials.
- Findings
- Naive gave wrong answer 36.8% of the time
- 25% of participants did not conform ever
- When interviewed most participants conformed to avoid rejection.
- Variations
- Group size
- No need for a majority more than 3- unanimity = higher conformity
- Unanimity
- Presence of a dissenter reduced conformity- gave naive social support
- Task difficulty
- Made lines similar in length = conformity increase = ISI
- Group size
- Evaluation
- Time conducted
- Perrin and Spencer 1980 repeated and found 1/396 engineering students conformed. 1950s America = conformist society.
- Artificial situation
- Knew they were in research - may have just gone along due to demand characteristic. low ecological validity as it was not an everyday situation
- Limited application
- Only conducted on white men who stem from an individualist culture- women are more concerned about social relationships and conform more
- Time conducted
