    • the difference in oxygen levels in the arteries before diffusion and in the veins after diffusion
    • during exercise muscles extract large amounts of oxygen from the blood and so the a-vO2 diff is high
      • this increase in a-vO2 diff affects gaseous exchange at the alveoli
