      • Bernard reading speech which explains his evidence for Byron killing Chater in a duel
        • Chloe, Gus and Valentine all listen with varying degrees of attention
        • Hannah, excited, wants to show Valentine something but Chloe stops her so Bernard can continue
          • Bernard continues but Hannah and Valentine make the occasional remark
            • Bernard threatens to walk out because everyone is not listening
              • Bernard eventually finishes and Hannah begins to rip apart his argument
                • Hannah does this for his own good as she knows if he goes public he will get shot down
                  • Bernard thus makes remarks about Hannahs book Caro - Hannah gives up trying to help him
      • Valentine questions Bernards evidence
        • Bernard dismisses him, just 'trivial'
          • Argue back and forth about this until Bernard insults Valentines grouse work and he swiftly leaves
            • Chloe and Gus also leave
      • Bernard invites Hannah to London and to sleep with him
        • Hannah turns him down
          • Bernard states shes a romantic at heart but Hannah tries to say goodbye to him
            • Bernard reveals he is Chloes date for the costume ball
            • Bernard gives Hannah a book he found in the library about the hermit
      • Valentine and Hannah discuss the letter she found
        • Valentine recognizes from the letter that the hermits obsession was with the Second Law of Thermodynamics
        • Hannah realises the hermit was born in the same year as Septimus
          • She believes they are the same person but she must find proof

    • Scene 6
      • Characters: Jellaby Septimus Lady Croom
      • Pistol shot at dawn - Septimus returns
        • Septimus shot a rabbit for Thomasina's favourtie dish - rabbit pie
        • Septimus spent the night in the boathouse - awaiting the duel
          • Whilst he was gone Captain Brice left Sidley Park with the Chaters
            • Lord Byron also left thereafter
              • Septimus asks Jellaby if Byron left his copy of the Couch of Eros
                • Jellaby states he left nothing not even a tip
                  • Septimus gives Jellaby money so he will speak of the events
            • Mr Chater and Captain Brice were drunk , Lady Croom witnessed Mrs Chater at Byrons door
              • Lady Croom enters before Jellaby can continue
          • Lady Croom looked for Septimus in his room
      • Lady Croom confronts Septimus about 2 letters in his room
        • One to Thomasina about rice pudding, the other describing what he would like to do to Lady Croom
          • Supposed to be read after his death (in the duel)
        • Lady Croom banished Byron, Brice and the Chaters and wants Septimus to follow
      • Jellaby delivers Lady Crooms tea along with a letter from Byron to Septimus
        • Septimus burns this to please Lady Croom
      • Lady Croom explains the Chaters have gone to the indies
        • Mr Chater to be a botanist for Brice
      • Septimus explains that his unsatisfied desires for Lady Croom is what led him to sleep with Mrs Chater
        • Lady Croom takes this as a compliment and tells Septimus to meet her at 7 - with a book
  • Valentine and Hannah discuss the letter she found
    • Valentine recognizes from the letter that the hermits obsession was with the Second Law of Thermodynamics
    • Hannah realises the hermit was born in the same year as Septimus
      • She believes they are the same person but she must find proof
