- Aquinas' design argument
- In the time of Aristotle, churches felt threatened by the alternative and more attractive ways of understanding the world
- So Aquinas wanted to make faith and reason compatible
- Knowledge of God could be reached in two ways
- relevation
- where God chooses to reveal the truth to people (bible)
- Human Reason
- Which God gave us for this very purpose
- relevation
- He presented five ways of showing that God exists SUMMA THEOLOGICA
- The fifth way
- Nature seems to have an order or purpose to it
- Nothing is purposeful without the aid of a 'guiding hand'
- Someone has to shoot the arrow for it to travel
- Nothing is purposeful without the aid of a 'guiding hand'
- Everything in nature which moving but has no intelligence must be directed to its goal by God
- Nature seems to have an order or purpose to it
- The fifth way
- 'some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to its end, and this being we call God'
- In the time of Aristotle, churches felt threatened by the alternative and more attractive ways of understanding the world
