  • Aquinas' design argument
    • In the time of Aristotle, churches felt threatened by the alternative and more attractive ways of understanding the world
      • So Aquinas wanted to make faith and reason compatible
    • Knowledge of God could be reached in two ways
      • relevation
        • where God chooses to reveal the truth to people (bible)
      • Human Reason
        • Which God gave us for this very purpose
    • He presented five ways of showing that God exists SUMMA THEOLOGICA
      • The fifth way
        • Nature seems to have an order or purpose to it
          • Nothing is purposeful without the aid of a 'guiding hand'
            • Someone has to shoot the arrow for it to travel
        • Everything in nature which moving but has no intelligence must be directed to its goal by God
    • 'some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to its end, and this being we call God'
