  • Animal and plant cells
    • nucleus
      • controlls activity of the cell
      • contains genes on the chromosones
      • chromosomes instruct for making new cells or new organisms
    • Cytoplasm
      • liquid gel, most chemical reactions needed for life take place
    • cell membrane
      • controls passage of substances into and out of the cell
    • mitochondria
      • structures in the cytoplasm, where oxygen is used and most of the energy is released during respiration
    • ribsomes
      • Where protein synthesis takes place.
      • all proteins needed in the cell are made here
    • plant cells
      • chloroplasts
        • found in green parts, green as they contain chlorophyll.
          • chlorophyll absorbs light energy to make food by photosynthesis. root cells don't chloroplast as they are underground and don't photosynthesise
    • cell wall
      • made of cellulose, strengthens the cell and supports it
        • permanent vacuole
          • space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap. important for keeping cells rigid to support plant
