  • Analyse the ways in which green crime can be defined.
    • =Crime against the environment
    • Globalisation
      • e.g. pollution in one part of planet => acid rain in another part= poisons watercourses + destroys forests.
      • e.g. Chernobyl (Ukraine (1986) => spread of radioactive material over thousands of miles.
    • Green Criminology
      • e.g. Bhopal Disaster = wider view = advatages of placing plant in area with little health + safety/ environmental legislation=> 6 million MORE mercury found in groundwater= NEVER cleaned up
      • Marxism
        • capitalist class= define crime => own acts NOT criminalised + Green criminologists = states + transnational corporations define in own interests what is unacceptable environmental harm.
      • Ecocentric
        • Humans + environment = interdependent  e.g. both liable to exploitation by global capitalism
      • CRITICISM
        • - Broader view = difficult to define boundaries of field of study + moral/ political statements about which actions= wrong => matter of values + NOT objective.
    • Traditional Criminology
      • NOT concerned with green crime = NO law broken
      • CRITICISM
        • Definitions of environmental crimes accepted= shaped by powerful groups to serve own interests.
      • e.g BHOPAL DISASTER= focuses on breaches of safety legislation + failure to follow maintenance procedures => 6 safety systems failed => 30 tonnes of gas spreading through city.
      • Anthropocentric
        • Economic growth before environment= humans have right to control nature for own needs.
    • Transgressive Criminology
      • = oversteps boundaries of traditional criminology to include new issues.
    • Types
      • PRIMARY
        • Air pollution
        • Deforestation
        • Species decline + animal abuse
        • Water Pollution
      • SECONDARY
        • State violence against oppositional groups (e.g. Greenpeace).
        • Hazardous waste + organised crime
          • BRIDGELAND (2006)
        • Environmental Discrimination
          • SOUTH (2014)
