- Gerald denies this: having money now more important than land owning gentry
- Considers that his importance as a business man makes him superior to a police Inspector
- Contrast: from relaxed and rather condescending in his manner to aggressive as he finds himself having to defend his actions
- Learnt about way factory workers may have regarded their boss
- Ironic that Mr B sacked Eva for showing qualities of leadership- the same qualities for which he was going to promote her
- Starts to take the idea of scandal more seriously (more concerned about hiding it than knowing the truth)

- Shelia light hearted and enthusiastic
- Agrees with the Inspector 'aren't cheap labour'- they're people
- Distress at girl's suicide strengthens when she compares her misery with her own happiness that evening
- Eric
- Eric lacks control 'an ***'
- Eric- more sympathetic
- Eric and Shelia both feel initial sympathy for the girl
- Eric is prepared to believe that his father's treatment of the girl might have a link with her death
- Inspector
- Immediate impact- more complicated than ordinary whodunnit
- Creates a big impression seems solid full of purpose
- Takes control of situation calmly
- Immediately ***umes role of someone who is a force for good
- Inspector and Eric sympathetic to Eva- clear contrast
- Shows photograph to one person at a time: mystery
- Photograph has an immediate effect on whoever sees it
- Attracts sympathy of Shelia and audience with his clear hard-hitting description
