      • Mr Birling and Gerald are then left alone for a while and Mr Birling talks oh his social aspirations
      • it is made clear Gerald and the Birlings are pleased with their lives and see themselves as good people.
      • Eric returns to the room, Mr Birling continues to talk to the young men about his experience of the world but is interrupted by the doorbell
    • WHAT CHANGES THE SITUATION?
      • inspector Goole arrives
      • the audience are told about the suicide of a young women called Eva Smith
      • the inspector is confident, abrupt and mysterious
      • Mr Birling sacked Eva from his factory two years ago, in September 1910
      • the inspector is clearly on Eva's side and this angers Mr Birling
      • At the end of act 1 Shelia innocently enters the room
      • Hearing Eva's story, Eric feels sorry for hr, which causes him to argue with his father
      • Mr Birling finds himself defending his actions and Gerald supports him
      • this turned into an unsuccessful strike, after which the ringleaders, including Eva were sacked
