- Act 1
  - The Birling family are spending a happy evening celebrating Sheila's engagement to Gerald Croft- this marriage will result in two businesses combining to become even more successful.
    - Whilst they are all having an amazing time An Inspector comes to enquire about a suicide of a girl name Eva Smith.
- Act 2
  - The Inspector gets suspicious and his attention falls upon Gerald who then says that he knew the girl as he met her at the music hall in Brumley. He then says that Eva and himself had become lovers for a short period of time.
  - Then the Inspector questions Mrs Birling. She says that Eva had come to her to ask for help at a charitable organisation.Mrs Birling says that Eva was pregnant and could not ask her father for money (so she needed a job).
  - Mrs Birling convinced everyone at the organisation to refuse Eva's help. This is because she believes that Eva is offended, as she is putting on grace, that she uses the name "Mrs Birling"
- Act 3
  - Eric realises that everyone knows about his "secret". Therefor he decides to tell them about how he met Eva Smith and her subsequent pregnancy. As the Inspector questions Eric also reveals that he had given the girl money however he had stolen from his father.
    - Everyone is horrified that Eric stole from his fathers business let alone helping the girl. The Birlings are unaware about the responsibility Eric took in order to help the girl as they are more intrigued into Eric stealing. Soon after, the Inspector makes a speech and then leaves the family, allowing them to examine their behaviour.
