      • had power to overturn laws if it believed they were against American Constitution
      • during New Deal, court was dominated by Republicans, who declared certain aspects of New Deal as unconstitutional
      • Republicans argued that these laws extended role of federal government & undermined local government
      • in response Roosevelt threatened to create 6 more Supreme Court judges who would support his policy to out-vote Republican judges
      • Supreme Court later accepted New Deal measure
    • Republican Politicians
      • criticised Roosevelt- New Deal interfering too much- Roosevelt = dictator- believed in 'laissez faire'
      • supported by most businesses- argued new deal was doing too much
      • thought Roosevelt= dictator & controlling people's lives
      • wanted to return policies of 1920s, when businesses thrived
    • Radical Left Wing Politicians
      • said New Deal didn't do enough
      • believed Roosevelt should interfere more- take wealth from rich & distribute to poor
      • some Democrats argued Roosevelt wasn't doing enough
      • believed more action was needed to aid disadvantaged groups
      • Senator Huey Long of Louisiana wanted to limit personal wealth to $3 million in a scheme called 'Share Our Wealth'= government taxes shared between all Americans
        • Long had many radical supporters, but also enemies- was assassinated in 1935
