- There are three different types of attachments
- Secure - high willingness to explore, moderate stranger anxiety, separation anxiety, enthusiastic reunion
- Insecure-avoidant - high willingness to explore, low stranger anxiety, indifferent on separation, avoids reunion contact
- Insecure-resistant - low willingness to explore, high stranger anxiety, high separation anxiety, seeks reunion but rejects
- When conducting the study Ainsworth found patterns of behaviour in children
- 66% of infants were secure
- 22% of infants were insecure-avoidant
- 12% of infants were insecure-resistant

- 1. In a 9x9 foot room the infants movements were recorded
- 2. She observed: separation anxiety, reunion behaviour and stranger anxiety
- 3. She observed every 15 seconds by recordings or a one-way mirror
- 4. She used 5 behavioural categories
- proximity and contact seeking behaviours
- contact maintaining behaviours
- proximity and interaction avoiding behaviours
- contact and interaction resisting behaviours
- search behaviours
- 5. Each item is scored for intensity on a scale of 1 to 7
