  • Ageing Population - Case Study (UK)
    • Causes
      • People living longer - improvements in health care; 1980 - 2006 life expectancy rose (2.6 women and 6.4 men)
      • Lots of babies in 1940 - 1960 (baby booms)
      • Since 1970 fall in birth rates - more older people
    • Problems
      • More elderly people living in poverty - don't have a good enough pension
      • Aren't enough economically active people - government cannot pay state pension
      • Heath care service under pressure - over 75 average stay 13 days; UK average 8 days
    • Strategies
      • Raise retirement age - 60 and 65 to 68
      • Encourage migrant workers - increase economically active people
      • Encourage women to have children - family tax credits
      • Encourage people to take out private pensions - not so dependant on government
    • Effectiveness
      • Too early to tell
