    • White people were still against and were racist to black people, an example is:
      • May 1866 two horse-drawn carriages collided, one driver was white, one was black. Black war veterans came to help the black driver and three days of racial violence followed by white people.
        • When the rioting ended 46 black people were dead, 5 black women had been *****, schools, houses and churches had been *****
      • Demonstrates the racial tensions and violence between black and white people
    • The Ku Klux Klan and "White Supremacy"
      • They left a burning cross as their calling card.
        • Klan activity was almost exclusively located on the plantation belt in the south
      • They were against black people and anyone who supported them.
        • Jack Dupree was a Republican he demanded equal rights for black and white people. He was killed in front of his wife.
      • Black people were frequently beaten, tarred and feathered
      • Many of the attacks were carried out at night
        • Many of the attacks happened in Mississippi, Louisiana and other southern states
      • Prosecution of the Klan began in 1871 and by 1872 the Klan was suppressed. In 1920s it revived again
    • Enforcement Acts 1870 & 1871
      • Passed to deal with terrorist violence against black Americans
