- The country is extremely poor and is highly dependent on aid, agriculture and trade with neighbouring countries.
- Afghanistan has pledged over $57 billion of aid since 2001.
- The current GDP per capita stands at about $1000.
- Poppy cultivation and opium trade generate around $3 billion in illicit economic activity. 3.3 million people depend on opium production for their livelihood.

- 100 villages and their surrounding environments were destroyed.
- Lack of clean water as water infrastructure was destroyed, resulting in bacterial contamination. Rivers became polluted due to poorly built landfill sites nearby.
- The potential for flooding is high as the country has 2% of forest cover.
- Pollution in air, soil and water such as cyclonite which may cause cancer.
