  • Aerobic Capacity
    • Definition
      • The ability to take in, transport and use oxygen to sustain prolonged periods of aerobic work
      • It's expressed as millilitres per kilogram of body mass per minute (ml kg min-1)
    • Age
      • VO2 max declines with age
      • increase in body fat declines VO2 max - muscle tissue utilises oxygen at higher rates than fat
      • reduction in muscle mass = VO2 max declines
      • reduction in heart rate - less blood going to the muscles per minute
    • Training
      • increase VO2 max
      • increases stroke volume
      • increases cardiac output
      • increases heart rate and minute ventilation (VE)
      • increases red blood cells - hymoglobin - mitochondria
    • Gender
      • females have a lower VO2 max than males
      • body composition - women have a higher percentage of body fat - fat uses less oxygen than muscles
      • females have smaller lungs, heart, stroke volume, cardiac output and lower haemoglobin

      • 21 levels - each levels last a minute - gets quick and quick, 20m distance between markers

      • predicts the power output at a project heart rate of 170 bpm

      • measurement process
        • 1. the athlete performs two consecutive six minute bicycle rides
        • 2. the first one, the workload is selected to produce a HR between 120 - 140 bpm
        • 3.the second one, the workload is selected to produce a HR of between 150 - 170 bpm
        • 4. average HR and power output (watts) are recorded
        • 5. data is then plotted onto a graph
        • the relationship between HR and VO2 max is identified
