  • Advantages and Disadvantages of Federalism
    • Advantages
      • Devolving power over policy can be a good thing!
        • By devolving power of policy making, it can lead to diverse ways over how to approach certain policies, this can make an impact on other states or even federal law.
          • For example, California's liberal stance on the legalisation of cannabis has led to Colorado and Washington State to also legalise it.
      • It considers the geographical and cultural differences within the US
        • Within the US there are several religious and cultural differences, For example in Utah, Mormonism is an important part of people's everyday lives. This allows the states to reflect their own wishes.
          • A Counter Argument to this is the development of the 'Two-America's'
            • For example, California's liberal stance on the legalisation of cannabis has led to Colorado and Washington State to also legalise it.
      • Arguably, federalism allows for a more responsive government
        • The separation of powers within the states makes politicians more responsive as they are held to account at the ballot every 2 - 6 years
    • Disadvantages
      • Racial and Economic Inequalities
        • Arguably, in the Southern states, there are less education and health outcomes, and more ethnic minorities are more likely to come from Southern states.
          • This is generally from the unwilligness of the South to act on it which can be arguably caused from the federalist nature of the US.
      • Creates a more complicated and expensive bureaucracy
        • States are given block grants which can effectively cause a financial strain on the state and also the constituents in that state
          • For example, the passing of No Child Left Behind and the Obama's Affordable Care Act gave a significant amount of strain which many found impossible. Therefore, states should be able to set their own limits.
