  • Adaption strategies
    • Change in Agricultural Systems
      • Moving production to another location due to changing temperatures and extreme weather
      • Increasing irrigation in areas due to changing preciptation
      • Changing the crops and varieties grown and the time of year they are planted, such as drought-resistant crops or switching to livestock production which tends to have more guaranteed returns
      • The cost of adapting to climate change is more difficult for poorer subsistence farmers
        • Untitled
      • The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation states that agriculture needs to be climate-smart if it is to feed the world.
    • Managing Water Supply
      • Reducing demand for water
        • As Mayor of London, Boris Johnson developed a Water Strategy to reduce London's water demand.
        • By 2030, all London homes should have been offered a free retrofit package of water-efficient  devices, including aerators
      • Increasing Supply
        • Thames Water opened a desalination plant in Beckton in 2010 to increase water supply
        • Water is taken from the River Thames at low tide.
          • A process called reverse osmosis is used to produce drinking water for 400,000 homes.
            • The plant requires a lot of energy (enough to power 8,000 homes), so carbon emissions need to be offset by a biodiesel electricity plant.
    • Reducing Risk From Rising Sea Levels
      • London is currently well protected against rising sea levels by the Thames Barrier.
        • The Thames Barrier has been closed over 100 times since it was built, in 1982 to stop tidal surges entering London
        • The Barrier was designed with an expectation it would be breached once every 1,000 year, but a 50cm rise in sea level would increase the risk to once every 100 years
