- ACT 1 PROLOGUE
- The audience is told of the quarrel between the two families, the Montagues and Capulets.
- The quarrel has become increasingly violent.
- We learn that the bitterness and fighting will only end through the death of the Montague son and the Capulet daughter who were lovers.
- "Star-crossed lovers"
- Suggests their destiny was written in the stars.
- Suggests their ruling planets are at odds with each other- just like their families are at odds with each other.
- KEY THEME:FATE
- The prologue also suggests their deaths will be the only way their "parents rage" will end.
- "Star-crossed lovers"
- The prologue is written in the form of a sonnet. The fourteen line structure was a classical form used in Elizabethan love poetry and is used here to explain the tragic love story to follow.
- STRUCTURE:AIMING HIGH
- "From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life"
- This establishes the dramatic tension for the audience as they are pre-warned of a tragic suicide and can only helplessly witness the tale unfold.
