  • Acids and Alkalis
    • Alkalis
      • more than pH 7
      • all alkalis have hydroxide ions in them
      • OH-(aq) ions are produced when alkalis are added to water
        • They ionise/dissociate in water
          • The strength of an acid is the measure of the degree of ionisation.
        • Strong alkalis
          • Dissociate completely, meaning their molecules break up completely into ions when they dissolve in water.
            • Strong acids
              • Produce lots of/higher concentration of H+ ions
              • very low pH
          • Produce lots of/higher concentration of OH- ions
          • very high pH
        • Weak Alkalis
          • Dissociate partially, meaning their molecules do not completely break up into ions in solutions
          • high pH
          • Produce less/ lower concentration of OH- ions
    • Acids
      • less than pH 7
      • all acids have hydrogen ions in them
      • H+(aq) ions are produced when acids are added to  water
        • They ionise/dissociate in water

          • low pH
          • Produce less/lower concentration of H+ ions
    • Neutral
      • pH 7 is neutral
      • these contain equal amounts of H+ ions and OH- ions
      • Neutralisation
        • Acid
          • react to produce salt and water
            • Base
              • Alkalis
