  • Abdication of the Tsar 1917
    • Long term factors
      • Tsarina and Rasputin in charge of Russia: damaged image of royal family.
      • Zemgor as an opposition: they were unified and full of discontent.
      • Progressive bloc wanting a constitutional monarch: this was a more political movement and had power.
      • National inefficiency: failures to deliver foodstuffs, sanitation, desertions etc.
      • Inflation and high unemployment: the economy was suffering hugely after a brief period of industrialisation.
      • Military failures: Tannenburg, desertions, and man-power shortages made the war feel like it was for nothing.
    • Short term factors
      • 14th Feb 1917: 100k workers strike in Petrograd. Bread rationed. Police are struggling to keep order and are attacked.
        • 22nd Feb: 20 workers locked out of Putilov Iron Works. More strikes occur.
          • 23rd Feb: 90k workers strike. 240k on the streets marching.
            • 24th Feb: 200k workers strike shouting revolutionary slogans.
              • 25th Feb: 250k strike (more than half of capital's workforce). Violence escalates while police try to oppress. Some Cossacks refuse to shoot.
                • 26th Feb: Tsar is contacted about chaos in Petrograd. He just tells them to stop the Duma from meeting.
                  • 27th Feb: Tsar orders the military to restore order. Mutiny occurs leading to 66k soldiers arming protestors with 40k rifles. Police headquarters taken over and prisons opened. Duma meet up to create 12-man assembly to take over govt. Army stops attacking and soon Petrograd Soviet is created and supplies food for the city.
                    • 28th Feb: Tsar offers to work with the Duma but they say it is too late.
                      • Order No.1 is established by Petrograd Soviet. Nicholas' train diverted and he was forced to give his younger brother Mikhail power. Tsar is abdicated and put under house arrest with his family.
