  • The Character of Places
    • Physical Endogenous
      • Location
        • Refers to where a place is, like on the coast or inland
        • Can be characterised by the features that are present because of their location
        • A coastal place may have a port due to being on the sea, but an inland place could have a significant train station
      • Topography
        • Refers to the shape of the landscape
        • Can be characterised directly, like a place in a valley might be characterised as flat compared to a mountainous region having steep slopes
        • May also affect other factors of the place, like land use where flat places may be suitable for large-scale crop farming
      • Physical Geography
        • Refers to the environmental features of a place, like altitude, aspect, soil and rock type
        • Can be characterised directly, a place could have igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic rocks, forming different landscapes
        • Affects other factors, like a place rich with natural resources may be characterised by industries that exist there, like mining and smelting
    • Human Endogenous
      • Built environment
        • Refers to aspects of places that are built by humans
        • Infrastructure specifically refers to the structures built for services, like roads and rail networks
        • Town and cities have high density buildings with complex infrastructure, compared to villages have fewer, smaller buildings at a lower density
      • Land use
        • Refers to the human activities that occur on the land like farming, industry & leisure
        • One of the most important human factors in defining character of places, like farming is associated to rural areas
        • Affects other factors like the built environment, high-rise, high-density are often required for businesses
      • Demographic and economics
        • Demographics are about who lives in a place and what they're like, which includes age, gender, education & religion
          • Can directly contribute to the character, like people retiring to seaside locations means they have high proportions of older people
        • Economics are factors to do with work and money, like income and employment rates
          • Can directly contribute, places like Kensington have a high proportion of above average earners and so is wealthy
    • Exogenous Factors
      • Tourism
        • Influences the character of many places
        • Land use of Las Vegas are affected with casinos and hotels for tourists
      • Investment
        • Flows of investment affect the character of places
        • Nissan has a factory in Sunderland, influencing the character and the land use and type of employment around the factory
      • Location
        • Character of places can be influenced by their relative location to other places
        • Villages and towns outside cities can be characterised as commuter settlements to that city (Tunbridge Wells)
      • Migration
        • Migration can influence the character of places
        • Parts of the UK have an ethnically diverse population (27% of Birmingham are Asian), giving unique demographic character
      • About how places are related to other places, and how relationships can affect their character
