- Refers to where a place is, like on the coast or inland
- Can be characterised by the features that are present because of their location
- A coastal place may have a port due to being on the sea, but an inland place could have a significant train station
- Topography
- Refers to the shape of the landscape
- Can be characterised directly, like a place in a valley might be characterised as flat compared to a mountainous region having steep slopes
- May also affect other factors of the place, like land use where flat places may be suitable for large-scale crop farming
- Physical Geography
- Refers to the environmental features of a place, like altitude, aspect, soil and rock type
- Can be characterised directly, a place could have igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic rocks, forming different landscapes
- Affects other factors, like a place rich with natural resources may be characterised by industries that exist there, like mining and smelting

- Refers to aspects of places that are built by humans
- Infrastructure specifically refers to the structures built for services, like roads and rail networks
- Town and cities have high density buildings with complex infrastructure, compared to villages have fewer, smaller buildings at a lower density
- Land use
- Refers to the human activities that occur on the land like farming, industry & leisure
- One of the most important human factors in defining character of places, like farming is associated to rural areas
- Affects other factors like the built environment, high-rise, high-density are often required for businesses
- Demographic and economics
- Demographics are about who lives in a place and what they're like, which includes age, gender, education & religion
- Can directly contribute to the character, like people retiring to seaside locations means they have high proportions of older people
- Economics are factors to do with work and money, like income and employment rates
- Can directly contribute, places like Kensington have a high proportion of above average earners and so is wealthy
- Demographics are about who lives in a place and what they're like, which includes age, gender, education & religion

- Land use of Las Vegas are affected with casinos and hotels for tourists

- Flows of investment affect the character of places
- Nissan has a factory in Sunderland, influencing the character and the land use and type of employment around the factory

- Villages and towns outside cities can be characterised as commuter settlements to that city (Tunbridge Wells)

- Migration can influence the character of places
- Parts of the UK have an ethnically diverse population (27% of Birmingham are Asian), giving unique demographic character
