  • A Christmas Carol-Themes
    • Dickens emphasises the importance of education through 2 children: Ignorance and Want
      • They are awful in their appearance "yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish. We are told to "beware" Ignorance as he is "doom"
        • Emotive language Dickens uses shows that Ignorance is worse than poverty and makes us think what the role of education can do to fight against poverty and the fight against a city that is poverty stricken like London
    • Poverty
      • The Cratchit's are the face of the poor in the novella
        • Mrs Cratchit's ribbons are the symbol of her desperation to make her dress look new-"brave in ribbons"
        • The family has a Christmas goose which "the rarest of all birds" but they quickly become full. This could suggest that they don't have enough to eat the rest of the year so they think they are full when perhaps they are not
          • "nobody said or thought it was at all a small pudding for a large family"
            • Adjective "small" highlights that it isn't enough food to feed the family but they are still grateful that they have it.
      • Charity collectors make us and Scrooge aware of the thousands of people who are in want of common necessaries
        • Many of the poor "would rather die" than go to the workhouses
          • AO3-New Poor Law:it was for financial assistance for anyone without a job had to enter a workhouse
            • There was a belief that poor people were lazy and we see that Dickens is against the law because of his own experience
    • Allegory that delivers several messages using characters and scenes
      • Dickens uses Scrooge as the symbol of the wealthy and aristocratic members of society who are ignorant to the misfortunes of the poor
        • Dickens shows how cold and unforgiving Scrooge is towards the lower class men as he is said to be so cold that "no warmth could warm his soul"
      • Using Scrooge Dickens is able to call for effective moral change in the wealthy thus making Scrooge part of an allegory rather than just being a character in a novella
      • Charles Dickens brings to life the 2 traits that mankind will inherit, ignorance of the wealthy and want of the poor. Metaphorically speaking Ignorance and Want are the children of mankind
      • Dickens message is that the wealthy must change their ways for the betterment of society. It is evident that Dickens is using this novella to portray his ideas therefor making it an allegory.
