- A war that is believed to be fought on behalf of God and with his support
- 3 Elements:
- The achievement of a religious goal
- Being authorised by a religious leader, eg. the Pope
- The promise of a spiritual reward for those who take part
- Usually believed that God himself is in favour
- God sent his people into battle, eg. Bible book of Joshua
- Eg. Crusades
- An attempt by Christianity to reclaim the Holy Land of Jerusalem from the Muslims
- In 2003, George Washington, claimed God had told him to invade Iraq
- However, Reverend Barry Lynn, said US soldiers are not crusaders
- Neither RCC not Anglican churches asked believers to fight since the Crusades
