    • POACHING of AFRICAN ELEPHANTS.
      • Occurs due to the desperate need for ivory (which elephant tusks are made from).   
        • Used to make jewellery+ musical instruments.
      • Reports from ETIS and MIKE: poaching is reducing (from 2006) - but not enough to allow elephant pop. to recover.
        • These two organisations both attempt to halt this progression of poaching, to keep them from extinction.
        • ETIS: highest levels of illegal ivory trade: 2012-13.
        • MIKE: Peaked levels of ivory trade in 2011 have been halted.
      • Tens of thousands of elephantshave been killed from 2010-15.
      • South Afirca - only country where illegal killings have not exceeded natural deaths (due to MIKE monitoring).

        • Providing protection for coastlines/ forestry/ fishery goods/ food security/ reducing the severity of climate change. 
      • The UN wants to protect them from rising sea levels and biomass  to help those living in the area use their positives.
        • The INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE MANGROVE ECOSYSTEM highlights its importance.
      • UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves has 86 sites out of 669 that include areas of mangroves. Many are in developing countries and Small Island Developing States

      • Its thought the UN had a responsibility to support those victims of cholera and overcoming their illness.
        • the UN has been called to compensate those victims.
        • the UN now needs to build suitable sanitation systems .
          • the no. of cases since 2011 have now reduced by 90%.
