  • Energy Basics
    • Transferring Energy
      • Mechanically - object moves due to a force
      • Electrically - charge moves through a P.D.
      • Heating - energy transferred from hot to cold
      • Radiation - energy transferred by light/sound waves
    • Useful Energy
      • Energy is useful when it is transferred to a useful store
      • Some input energy is always wasted, often as heat/sound
      • Less energy wasted means the device is more efficient
      • Wasted energy is normally transferred to the surroundings where it dissipates
    • Heating Transfers
      • Conduction
        • Vibrating particles transfer kinetic energy to other particles around them
        • Occurs in solids where particles are tightly packed together
        • As more particles vibrate, more energy is spread throughout the solid so its temperature rises
      • Convection
        • More energetic particles move from warmer to cooler areas
        • Occurs in liquids and gases where particles can move more
        • Convection currents are changes in density of the particles
      • Radiation
        • IR radiation is always being emmited
        • Hotter objects emit more than it absorbs, vice versa for cold objects
