- Introduction
- ritual Muslim prayer that is carried out 5 times a day
- Imposed by Allah
- Declare faith to Allah + seek to gain Allah's favour
- In Hadith, Muhammad give timings:
- Fajr - morning prayer [dawn and sunrise]
- Zuhr - midday prayer [early afternoon]
- Asr - late afternoon prayer
- Maghrib - prayer just after sunset
- Isha - night time prayer
- The call to prayer
- 1. From the inarets, the first adhan is made
- 2. the adhan is recited in Arabic, by the muezzin and reflects shahadah
- 3. muezzin gives iqmah in mosque main hall and lets worshippers know that prayer is about to begin
- Wudu
- ritual washing done before salah prayer
- symbolic action to reinforce niyyah - can be said aloud or within believer's heart
- follow set pattern - wash arms, hands, feet, mouth. if no water, use fine sand or dust
- after wudu, recite Shahadah
- Rak'ahs
- recitation of phrases with sequence of movements
- 8 movements and each has religious significance
- Jummah prayer
- during Zuhr, every friday, congregational worship at mosques, males make every effort to go, reminder of Ummah
- line up in rows, carry out zak'ahs, face mihrab [direction of makkah]
- once done, imam do sermon called a khutbah. join together help muslim community be cohesive, provide time to discuss any issues
- Shi'a prayer
- also pray 5 x a day but can join Zuhr and Asr and then Maghrib and Isha
- use piece of wood/clay from Kerbala [sacred city in Iraq] to rest head during prostration
- wrong to do on man made material - Muhammad prayed on mat from natural fibres supports this
- sunni concerned at specific use of clay from Kerbala as appears more important that Makkah which to them is wrong
