  • 2.1 Roles of the major parts of the digestive system
    • Roles of the major parts of the digestive system
      • Mouth
        • Starts digestion by physically breaking down food and adding amylase to starch to reduce it to maltose.
      • Small intestine
        • Many enzymes are secreted into the small intestine, this is also where a lot of digestive products are absorbed.
    • Types of digestion
      • Chemical
        • Breaking down large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble ones by a process called hydrolysis. This process is carried out by enzymes.
      • Physical
        • Food physically being broken down by either the teeth or the churning of the stomach. It allows food to be swallowed more easily and increases its surface area.
