View mindmap
  • Atomic structure
    • atom: the smallest part of an element that is still recognisable as that element
    • molecule: Two or more atoms covalently bonded. Contains a fixed number of atoms
    • atomic number: the number of protons in an atom. Defines which element the atom is
    • mass number: number of protons and neutrons in an atom
    • isotopes: atoms of the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
    • relative atomic mass(Ar): the weighted average mass of the isotopes of an element, relative to 1/12th the mass of a 12C atom
    • Relative Ar =  (mass number x abundance) -------------- total abundance
