    • Surgery
      • Anaesthetics were discovered to stop the huge pain they felt during an operation or amputation.
        • James Simpson discovered chloroform (1847), Queen Victoria gave birth under this anaesthetic.
      • Before 19th century operations were horrific and patients often died of shock, infection or loss of blood.
      • Antiseptics were discovered to stop infection spreading.
      • 1847 Ignaz Semmelweiss cut death rate in maternity wards by making Doctors wash hands in calcium chloride solution before treating patients.
      • 1854 Florence Nightingale improved standards in hospitals by getting them to change the linen and clean the floors etc. During the Crimean war she gave nurses proper training.
      • 1865 Joseph Lister used Pasteur’s Germ Theory to cut the death from 46% to 15% by spraying bandages and instruments with carbolic acid.
      • 1890 Surgeons began boiling instruments to sterilise them and kill the germs
      • Blood Transfusions were to stop blood loss.
    • Public health
      • 1853 vaccination against smallpox became compulsory.
      • 1848 the first Public Health Act was passed, a medical officer was appointed for every town.
      • 1854 improvements in hospital hygiene were introduced (thanks to Florence Nightingale)Untitled
      • 1875 the Public Health Act enforces laws about slum clearance and the provision of sewers and clean water.
      • By the late 19th century local councils were competing against each other to provide the best public health.
    • Doctors
      • 1823 the first issue of the medical journal the ‘LANCET’ was published.
      • 1832 The British Medical Association was formed.
      • 1803 Thomas Percival wrote the first book on medical behaviour.
