- 2 August - Maddox shows three NV torpedo boats approaching. US planes drove them away.
- 4 August - Maddox and C.Turner Joy reported to have sunk NV boats in a bad storm. Confusion as to what happened. Johnson ordered a strike on NV targets. 2 US jets were shot down
- 5 August - JOhnson asks congress for power to stop future attacks.
- 7 August - Congress passes Gulf of Tonkin Resolution with little opposition. Gave Johnson power to stop attacks on US forces and deploy troops
- North Vietnamese reaction
- More supplies were sent south by the NV for troops
- Vietcong were encouraged to attack US bases
- Fighting began at Binh Gia near Saigon on 2 December 1964. The VC won and took prisoners
- VC attacked Pleiku US airfield

- Both sides were committed to a war they didn't want
- USA wanted SV to be an independent nation that could defend itself

- Radars can be affected by a storm so there may not have been ships nearby
- North Vietnam still deny that they attacked the ships even today

- US boats secretly ferried AVRN troops to raid North Vietnam
