    • The flapper vote
      • Women who were known as flappers were seen as not responsible to have the vote. More women infact voted more for Cons than Labour.
      • 1928: Rep Act extended to make electorate 2.2 million. All women gain equal rights with men.
      • There was no idea of who women would vote for in 1929, as opinion polls were not used.
    • Election campaigns
      • Conservatives 'safety first': Baldwin is the man of the people and no radical ideas.
      • Labour 'socialist commonwealth': Reorganise industry in the interest of all and would result to a socialist commonwealth
      • Liberals 'we can conquer unemployment': Lloyd George made a big effort to reorganise and worked with Keynes.
    • New labour govt 1929 (Macdonald)
      • They won 288 seats but had less % of vote. Due to vote of no confidence in Cons, it meant 2nd minority govt.
      • They saw the opportunity to gain experience; wanted to build new council houses and raise the school leaving age to 15. Also to nationalise transport system. Tackle unemployment.
      • Wall street crash 1929 led to crash of the Labour party.
    • Political situation by 1929
      • 2 party state, Liberals were in decline and would not return.
      • Labour were on the rise and Cons were still strong backed by newspapers etc.
      • Mac's govt was a new age of socialism
    • Economic situation
      • Decline of staple industries; also high unemployment which was never less than 1 million.
      • Gold standard of 1925 cause more problems for the situation of 1929
    • Social situation
      • Females were breaking into male only domains
      • Radio becoming a feature in households; new inventions, cars, and air travel benefitted the wealthy.
