- 19: Different body types
- Somatotype: Classification of body type
- Ectomorph
- An individual with narrow shoulders and narrow hips, characterised by thiness
- tend to excel at long distance events eg. marathon
- Mesomorph
- An individual with wide shoulder and narrow hips, characterised by muscularity
- Tend to be involved in sports which require strength and sudden bursts of energy. Their muscular build often means they are able to cope with anaerobic exercise
- Endomorph
- An individual with wide hips and narrow shoulders, characterised by fatness
- Often grouped in sports that depend on power, eg.forwards in rugby. Their extra body fat means that they can get more weight behind themeselves or actions
- Ectomorph
- Finding your somatotype
- Height, weight, bone size and muscle girth measurement as well as fat content are used to find a persons somatotype. Once these measurement are taken, the somatotype can be found using a computer programe or chart
- Mesomorphic ectomorph
- Example: High jumpers who are predominantly mesomorphic ectomorphs would have the highest rating in ectomorphy (thiness) and their second highest in mesomorphy (muscle)
- These examples show that the optimum body type is often a mixture of two somatotypes
- Take throwers who are predominantly endomorphic mesomorphs. This means their highest rating is in mesomorphy (muscle) and their second highest in endomorphy (fat)
