  • 1850 Compromise
    • California admitted as a free state
      • North :-)
      • Could have been split at 36 30 line creating different states, allowing south to have another slave state
    • Slave Trade in Washington D.C should end BUT slavery could continue
      • North :-)
      • South :-(
    • New Mexico and Utah to be organised into territories without restrictions on slavery (popular sovereignty)
      • South believed they could "plant" their institution in these territories
        • Unlikely
    • Texas surrender land to New Mexico, then Congress take away $10milion debt that Texas owes
      • More land likely to end up free as New Mexico could be divided into more than one state
    • New, stricter, Fugitive Slave Law
      • Caused greatest tension as North feel Congress surrendered to the south
      • This was the only part of the compromise that really favoured the South
