- 1850 Compromise
- California admitted as a free state
- North :-)
- Could have been split at 36 30 line creating different states, allowing south to have another slave state
- Slave Trade in Washington D.C should end BUT slavery could continue
- North :-)
- South :-(
- New Mexico and Utah to be organised into territories without restrictions on slavery (popular sovereignty)
- South believed they could "plant" their institution in these territories
- Unlikely
- South believed they could "plant" their institution in these territories
- Texas surrender land to New Mexico, then Congress take away $10milion debt that Texas owes
- More land likely to end up free as New Mexico could be divided into more than one state
- New, stricter, Fugitive Slave Law
- Caused greatest tension as North feel Congress surrendered to the south
- This was the only part of the compromise that really favoured the South
- California admitted as a free state
