        • Richard had become a source of suspicion over the princes in the tower so Henry was met with mostly celebrations
      • He had little claim to the throne
        • so he needed to consolidate his power quickly
      • He was descended through the female line of his mother (Margaret Beaufort)
        • No one else could fulfill the role of a Lancastrian claimant other than Henry
