What do transcription factors control?
The transcription of target genes
1 of 12
What happens as a result of different genes being expressed?
Different proteins are made and these proteins modify the cell, these determine the cell structure and control cell processes (including expression of more genes, which produce more proteins)
2 of 12
Where do transcription factors move?
From the cytoplasm to the nucleus
3 of 12
Once the transcription factors are in the nucleus, what happens next.
In the nucleus they bind to specific DNA sites near the start of their target genes, the genes they control the expression of.
4 of 12
How do transcription factors control expression?
By controlling the rate of transcription
5 of 12
Some transcription actors, called activators, increase the rate of transcription, give an example of this.
Activators help RNA polymerase bind to the start of the target gene and activate transcription
6 of 12
What transcription factor decreases the rate of transcription
Repressors
7 of 12
Give an example of a repressor in action.
Repressor binds to the start of the target gene, preventing RNA polymerase from binding, stopping transcription.
8 of 12
What does siRNA do?
siRNA interferes with Gene Expression, interefering with the expression of SPECIFIC genes
9 of 12
What does siRNA stand for?
Small interfering RNA
10 of 12
Describe the structure of siRNA molecules.
short, double-stranded RNA molecules
11 of 12
siRNA beses are complementary to what?
To specific sections of a target gene and the mRNA that's formed from it.
