What is asthma?
Inflammation of the small tubes (bronchi) which carry air out of the lungs. Something often triggers this. Airways become narrow and tighter. Increase in the production of phlegm.

What is a stroke?
Occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. If the supply of blood is stopped or restricted, brain cells can begin to die.

What are the 2 types of stroke?
ISCHAEMIC - blot clot (80%) HAEMORRHAGIC - weakened blood vessel bursts (20%)

What is acute lymphoblastic leukaemia?
cancer of the white blood cells. Acute means the condition progresses rapidly and aggressively.

What is CHD?
when your heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build up of fatty substances in coronary ateries.

What is anorexia nervosa?
an eating disorder and mental health condition. They try and keep their weight as low as possible. Often have distorted images of themselves.

What is bulimia nervosa?
try and control their weight by serverly restricting the amount they eat, then binge eating and purging the food from their body by making themselves sick by using laxatives.

What is schizophrenia?
It is a long term mental health condition that causes a range of psychological symptoms. Doctors often describe it as a psychotic illness. This means sometimes a person may not be able to distinguish their own thoughts from reality.

What is diabetes type 1?
The pancreas (a small gland behind the stomach) does not produce any insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels.

What is diabetes type 2?
Occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin to function properly, or the bod'ys cells do not react to insulin. It is far more common then type 1. Usually affects people over the age of 40.

What is bowel Cancer?
Cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts it is sometimes called colon cancer or rectal cancer.

What is breast cancer?
cancer that originates in the breast tissue. Most of these are in the glandular tissue, though most common of all starts in the ducts.

What is testicular cancer?
it is a highly treatable cancer affecting one or both testicles. The most common type is known asd germ cell TC.

What is chlamydia?
An STI caused by tiny bacterium, chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most common STI in the UK.

What are herpes?
An STI. Can have recurrent infections.

What is Gonorrhoea?
An STI caused by bacterium called the Neisseria gonorrhoea bacteria. Found in moist warm areas.

What is cardiac arrest?
A cardiac arrest happens when you heart stops pumping blood around the body. The most common cause of a cardiac arrest is a life threatening abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation.

What is obesity?
Obese is the term used to describe someone who is overweight with a high degree of body fat.
