Simile
Comparing things using the words like or as.

Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds.

Rhythm
The sound of the poem, in particular the amount of syllables in each line.

Enjambment
When sentences or phrases carry on across different lines or stanzas.

Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like the sounds they describe.

Metaphor
Comparisons which basically say that something is something else. They can sometimes be very long (an extended metaphor may run through a whole poem).

Aliiteration
Repetition of consonant sounds.

Personification
Giving non-human things human characteristics.

Oxymoron
Two words next to each other which are contradictory.

Sibilance
Repetition of soft 's' and 'z' sounds.

Ambiguity
Deliberate suggestions of double or multiple meanings.

Internal Rhyme
When rhymes are found in the middle of line rather than at the end.

Juxtaposition
Placing contrasting ideas near each other to reflect upon each other.

A better name for a verse or section of a poem.
