Arranging an appointment, preparing questions in advance and recording what has been said.

Structured, can adapt depending on answers.

Time consuming if many views are needed.

What do questionnaires involve?
The creation of open or closed questions (closed are easier to analyse) which can be given to many people.

What are the advantages of Questionnaires?
Effective way of gathering many views and can be analysed easily.

What are the disadvantages of Questionnaires?
Impersonal and not effective if the correct questions have not been asked.

What does analysis of the existing paperwork involve?
Finding out how an existing system operates and getting an understanding of what is currently going on. By looking at existing documents you can get a good handle on what input, processes and outputs there are or should be.

What are the advantages of analysis of the existing paperwork?
Help to easily identify inputs, processes and outputs.

What are the disadvantages of analysis of the existing paperwork?
The reason a new system is needed is because its not the most effective solution. As a result, the documents might not give all the information needed.

What does observations involve?
Looking at people and processes.

What are the advantages of observations?
Can view people, procedures, programs used, system wait times and whether people are stressed.

What are the disadvantages of observations?
Talking to users may not give you all of the information and might bias you against what the client has asked for.

After identifying the problem what do you do?
Produce a list of the clients requirements.

What areas do you need to cover in the client requirements?
Data capture, Function - what the system actually has to do, Function - how will it do it - processes, User interface, Output, Storage, Security.

What do you do once the client requirements are written?
Go back to the client and check that they are correct.

What do you need to think about at each stage when identifying input, process and output?
What information needs to be produced as an output, What data would need to be put into the system, What processing the computer must do to turn it from the input to the output.
