It is considered hazordous because of plate tectonics and climatic patterns.

Along the San Andreas fault, the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate move in the same direction however the Pacific Plate moves more quickly, thus causing friction. This is called a conservative plate boundary. San Andreas fault line is between the two plates. Other fault lines run parallel to this main fault line, San Francisco is built over two of them. Fault lines move regularly, causing earthquakes.
