Focus on police view of hippies.

Young argued this police reaction changed the hippie behaviour. Once the police began to focus on their drug taking they became more secretive, less causal and more of the care focuses of the hippie culture.

Split people into groups who took drugs. Deviance was amplified. They became more extreme.

Deviancy amplification - the more the police react the more they push the behaviour underground, and the more extreme it gets.

Drug taking became a symbol of protest.
