Johnson County War 1892

Causes

  • People who owned land in Johnson County felt that  cattle barons were stealing their land.
  • Ranchers thought that homesteaders were rustling cattle.
  • Storekeeper James Averill and prostitute Ella Watson were accused of rustling some rebranded cattle and a lynch mob murdered them in front of their house.

Effects

  • the Wyoming Stock Growers Association hired gunmen and drew up a hit list of 70 people they suspected to be rustlers.
  • These vigilantes called themselves Regulators and killed two alleged Rustlers.
  • A group of locals attacked the Regulators at a ranch called the TA.
  • The Stock Growers Association uses their links with the government to call the army to rescue them.

Overall summary

No prosecutions resulted from the Johnson County War.
